Your N_XNE 2014 Music Guide

Amidst all the things that come with this time of year (Game 5, lifetime NBA bans, serious Lacrosse rap feuds, and the like), we the north nearly forgot about the other thing that creeps up around this time: North by NorthEast. This is a serious time for Toronto—and although the annual occurrence is often compared to its southern counterpart, the event has acquired a distinct character for the past 20 years that is wholly its own.

Whether or not this is your first NXNE experience, do check out some of the free shows at Yonge Dundas Square. Yes, it will be packed, but you will get to see great artists such as St.Vincent, Spoon, Sleigh Bells and Mac Demarco. And it does provide that outdoorsy festival ambiance we often look for during the warmer months. So try to get there early in order to get a good spot on the site, or head to the Imperial Pub patio if you would rather listen to the music, pint in hand.

You also have access to a ton of shows and parties across the city. You don’t need a wristband, but we do highly recommend you get your hands on one in order to get the most out of the festival.

We’ve narrowed down the many shows to our favourites.

*-Top Pick of the Night.
